How it works
Will a paramedic know to look for it?
Ambulance crews routinely check for medical jewellery around the neck and wrists when someone can’t tell them what’s wrong. The medical symbol on the front of every pendant tells them to look on the back.
Do I have to put my NHS number on it?
No. You can engrave whatever you like, and only one line is needed. We recommend adding your NHS number because in England it lets ambulance crews look up your Summary Care Record, which says far more than fits on a pendant.
What can a paramedic see with my NHS number?
In England, your Summary Care Record: the medicines you take, your allergies and any bad reactions you’ve had to medicines. Many records include more, such as long-term conditions. Your GP practice keeps it, not us. More about how it works.
Do you store my medical information?
No. We only use the words you ask us to engrave, to make and send your pendant. Your medical record stays with your GP. See our privacy policy.
Is there a subscription?
No. You pay once for the pendant and that’s it.
I live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Will it work?
Yes. A pendant with your name, a condition or someone to call helps wherever you are. If you’d like to add a health number, choose your CHI number in Scotland, your Health and Care number in Northern Ireland, or your NHS number in Wales. You pick the type of each line when you personalise your pendant.
Engraving
What should I have engraved?
Whatever would help someone look after you. Most people start with their name, then add the one thing a paramedic must know first, such as a condition, an allergy or a medicine, and someone to call. We also recommend your NHS number. Our engraving guide has examples.
How many lines can I have, and how long can they be?
Up to four lines, and only one is needed. Each line can be up to 18 characters on the Guardian, 16 on the Lifeline and 14 on the Heritage, including spaces.
For each line you choose a label, such as Name, Condition, Allergy, Medication, Emergency contact (ICE), Date of birth or NHS number. Or choose no label and just write your own words.
What if my medicines or conditions change?
If you’ve added your NHS number, your GP updates the record behind it, and that’s what the paramedic sees. That line on your pendant doesn’t need to change. If you’d like, we’ll email you every three months as a reminder to check your record.
Lines engraved on the pendant itself stay as they are, so it’s best to leave off things that change often, such as doses.
I made a mistake in my engraving. Can I change it?
Yes, if you tell us quickly. Call or email us the same day and we’ll change it before we engrave it. Once a pendant has been engraved, it can’t be changed.
Do you check the engraving?
Yes. Before you order, you’ll see a written proof of every line and tick to say it’s right. Then we read every line ourselves before we engrave it. If a number looks wrong or something is unclear, we’ll get in touch.
As you type an NHS, CHI or Health and Care number, we also check the digits add up.
Can I buy one without engraving?
Yes. Each pendant comes blank for less, and can be returned within 30 days if it’s not right.

Returns and care
Can I return my pendant?
Blank pendants can be returned within 30 days for a full refund. Engraved pendants are made just for you, so we can’t take them back if you change your mind, but if we’ve made a mistake or something is faulty, we’ll put it right. Delivery and returns.
What are the pendants made of?
The Guardian and the Lifeline have a polished silver-tone finish. The Heritage has a gold-tone finish with a textured border. All three have a white enamel front, and come on a chain in a matching finish.
We design and assemble them in London, and engrave them ourselves.
How do I look after it?
- Take it off for swimming, bathing and cleaning with household chemicals.
- Wipe it gently with a soft, dry cloth.
- Keep it in its box when you’re not wearing it, so the enamel isn’t knocked.
How long is the chain?
18 inches, with a second clasp point at 16 inches so you can wear it shorter. It comes in silver-tone or gold-tone to match the pendant.
